what's happening currently: Ministry in Puebla

As many of you may know our role has changed from what we originally intended when we arrived in Mexico. About a year ago we joined the work of El Puente (the Bridge) at the counsel of our home church. El Puente is a bilingual work reaching out to business class and multicultural persons in Puebla. Our role has continued to grow since we joined the team here.

Over the last seven years El Puente has grown from a Bible study to a fellowship group and are now in the process of becoming a recognized church. Ken’s part is to help bring a bit of structure and clarity. This responsibility means defining the functions of the church, defining values, mission statement, lines of communication, responsibility and accountability, as well as some teaching responsibilities along the way.

We also oversee the Prayer and Worship function for the church. For us this means having a group in our home on Thursday evenings. Last Thursday there were 15 people here with us for a really good and moving time. Diana always exercises her gift of hospitality by providing a meal for everyone. It has been one of the highlights of our time here as we welcome both Spanish and English worshipers. There is often someone new coming along.

Ken meets once a week with the young man who leads our worship for discussion/prayer/Bible study/planning. It is a joy to disciple him, and I really believe that he will make an impact on the Mexican church in his lifetime. Ken also meets with Pastor Steve most every week. We laugh, talk about what God is up to, and share our joys and frustrations. Steve was born in China to missionary parents and is full of insights and stories from his experiences.

Of course we are reaching out to those who are lost as well. God has brought specific people across our path which has given us an opportunity to share the love of Christ with them. Along the way we have also shared gospel literature with hundreds, and we recently completed a Bible study in Spanish for unbelievers entitled Un Creyente Cree Que... (A Believer Believes That...). It is posted along with Mateo (Matthew) and Lideres (Leaders) studies under "Resources - Bible Studies " if you want to download them for any Spanish speaking friends you might have.

We have been telling you a lot about what we have been doing with others, but a big part of missions is also what God is doing in us. We can tell you we have been so stretched, so challenged and at times so blindsided. It will take time to understand more clearly what God was doing in our lives and in our family's life over the last three years. We have definitely come to realize that life is fragile, and that our best and only hope is walking with and trusting God.
