Puebla The city, Puebla, is the capitol of the state of Puebla. It is located 60 miles southeast of Mexico City and has an altitude of over 7,000 feet. Nicknamed Angelopolis (City of Angels), Puebla has a temperate climate the year-round, being close to the equator yet at a high altitude. It experiences sunny days and chilly nights. Puebla was established by the Spaniards in 1531 as part of the route between Veracruz (Mexico’s most important port city) and Mexico City. Because of this it has more European characteristics than any other Mexican city. It was planned from the ground up by a Spanish designer rather than around pre-existing Indian cities. To see pictures of Puebla go to http://www.sipuebla.com/puebla1.htm. It is in the midst of a range of volcanoes. The four overlooking the city are the highest peaks in Mexico. Popocatepetl is an active volcano regularly spouting out ash and smoke. It was named by the Aztecs and means “Smoking Mountain.” Currently Popo, as it is called, is the tallest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere. Puebla is a growing city and is projected to reach 6 million in the next few years. The economic growth is based on its Volkswagen plant and other associated auto industries, tourism, and agricultural processing throughout the region. Three universities and a networking of highway systems add to the growth of the city. Puebla is known for its talavera pottery with each piece being completely handmade and painted. The bright decorative pieces reflect the festive Mexican culture. It is also known for its Mole poblano, which is a chocolate-chili sauce served on chicken and turkey. Tradition says it was invented by nuns in search of a dish that was worthy of a visiting dignitary. It has become the national dish of Mexico. The
zocalo is a park area in the center of the town. There you will find
open air restaurants, cafés, musicians, and sparkling fountains.
Connected to the zocalo are government buildings and the principle church
of the city. In Puebla that would be Catedral de Puebla where tradition
says angels hung the bells in the towers. Benches line the park and
make it a peaceful atmosphere for relaxing and conversation. |
